An £18 million retirement living development in Chester, offering 131 apartments with extra care facilities for older people aged 55 and over, has opened its doors for the first time.
The Abbot’s Wood development on Northgate Avenue is a partnership between one of the UK’s largest housing associations, Your Housing Group together with Cheshire West and Chester Council and the Homes & Communities Agency (HCA). The development of one and two bedroom apartments will be available for rent, full sale or shared ownership.
Kathy Cowell, Chair of Your Housing Group, said; “Abbot’s Wood is a fantastic example of partnership working. This multi-agency approach allows us to work with the local authority to meet the needs of our residents. With so many services under one roof, we can quickly and easily help residents access a range of care as and when they need it. Ultimately this allows people to remain independent and in their own homes for longer, knowing support is always there. This can be extremely beneficial for both their mental and physical health.”
Said Councillor Brenda Dowding Executive Member, Adult Social Care & Health; "The local authority is delighted to be working with Your Housing Group to secure high quality extra care apartments, which are designed to meet the needs of our residents.
“Given the substantial increase in the numbers of older people living in our borough, the type of housing provision offered at Abbot's Wood is increasingly seen as vital.
“These apartments will enable people to continue to live as independently as possible; to benefit from a range of on-site facilities; and will offer peace of mind by providing personal support tailored to resident's individual requirements."
Deborah McLaughlin, the HCA’s Executive Director for the North West, said: “I’m delighted to see this extra care housing scheme completed to such a high standard. We recognise the need for good quality independent living for the residents of Chester, and I’m sure the new residents will enjoy these facilities and the pleasant environment.”
Each of the specially designed apartments has a wet room and well equipped kitchen with built in appliances including integrated oven, hob and extractor fan. There are also assisted bathrooms within the building, for those residents who need a little more help with their everyday tasks. Abbot’s Wood has also been designed with dementia friendly aspects, including different colour schemes on each floor to enable familiarisation.
The development includes a bistro, a hairdressers and activity room which will offer a range of weekly activities. These amenities are open to the local community and non-residents are encouraged to use the facilities.
Abbot’s Wood has been designed to allow residents to live an independent life in a socially supportive environment. The onsite care and support team will provide help and support that will change to individual needs, providing a safe and secure environment and most importantly, giving residents and their families peace of mind.
Funding has been provided by The Department of Health, HCA and Your Housing Group.
The contractor was Warrington-based Cruden Construction and the architects were David Wood Michael Hyde
