A LANDMARK scheme which will see up to 1,100 homes built in Tamworth over the next decade has celebrated a major milestone.
Redrow revealed plans for Amington Garden Village in early 2016, before the Government announced that 14 garden villages would be created nationwide.
Now, Tamworth Borough Council chief executive Tony Goodwin and Cllr Steven Claymore, portfolio holder for regeneration, have joined Redrow regional director Graham Micklewright to cut the ribbon to mark the official launch of Amington Garden Village, at an event attended by politicians, industry guests and community groups.
Once the formalities were over, the event carried on into the evening with customers and homeowners from both Amington Garden Village and nearby Pennine Grange joining in the fun alongside Redrow staff.
Cllr Claymore said: “Tamworth like any other area of the UK is under pressure to build more houses and we were delighted when we were able to work with Redrow on this development. We wanted someone who could deliver a development that’s one of the best in the West Midlands and it looks like it’s going to be the case. The idea of a garden village like this is great. We are trying to create communities, especially one such as this where people will aspire to live. Hopefully that will be the case in 50 years’ time as it develops into a community. The launch event has allowed people to see the quality of the homes.”
The new homes are being built on the former Amington golf course site, which closed in October 2014 and is just minutes from Redrow’s regional headquarters at Kinsall Green.
Graham Micklewright said: “Amington Garden Village is our flagship scheme in the Midlands with up to 1,100 homes and associated infrastructure. It not only represents a significant commitment and investment in the Tamworth area, but is one of the largest developments we will be working on in the Midlands for the foreseeable future.”
Along with the new homes, Redrow has committed to invest £14 million in the local area. The housebuilder will contribute towards the cost of building a new primary school, create a new community woodland, extend the Hodge Lane Local Nature Reserve and fund improvements to sports facilities.
A total of around 25 hectares of land across the 60 hectare site will be retained and enhanced as public open space.
“What makes Amington special is the contours of the site – it was a former municipal golf course, with lots of ups and downs, which present plenty of challenges for the construction team, but a fantastic setting for the houses,” Graham added.
A cycling and pedestrian network will be created through the site, plus there are plans for a bus service between the development and the town centre. Redrow has also committed to invest in secondary and sixth form education and to finance highways improvements.
“The official launch event recognised the hard work and effort put in to get to this stage,” Graham explained. “Tamworth Borough Council has given us lots of support to help us get the scheme off the ground. This event also gave us an opportunity to acknowledge those working on site and to demonstrate to the community what we are going to provide to the area.”
Four show homes, examples of the three-bedroom Leamington and Worcester styles, four-bedroom Henley and five-bedroom Marlborough, are open at the Amington Fairway phase of the garden village from 10am to 5.30pm daily.
